[NMP] The Desire 4e, Distributed Workshop

At Nevermet Press, we have this thing called Distributed Workshops, where blogs can write stats for the system-neutral things in Nevermet Press’ content to be played with your favorite system. I’m one of the 4e guys doing these for NMP, and when I first saw The Desire, I could only think of my own love for mind control.

I love the Domination effect in D&D 4th Edition, and I love monsters that play around with it. It’s annoying the players however, so there has to be a balance, where Domination is not done so much that a player feels utterly shafted out of his or her character. So without further ado, I wrote some stats for The Desire, the first NMP villain, and a very special henchwoman.

Unlike most D&D 4e human monsters, the Knowledge for these two is gained using Streetwise rather than Nature.

The Desire

A pale, fierce woman with a bold, dangerous and irresistible beauty, always standing at the head of a social gathering – and the back of a turbulent battle.

Medium Natural Humanoid 600 XP
Initiative +6; Perception +10
Authoritative Presence Aura 5; Allies in the aura have a +1 bonus to attack rolls and Regeneration 2.

Closely Guarded
The Desire has a +2 bonus to AC and Reflex defense if an ally is adjacent to her.
Evil; Common, Abyssal
Skills: Perception +10, Insight +10, Diplomacy +12, Bluff +12, Streetwise +12
Str: 12 (+4)    Dex: 16 (+6)    Wis: 15 (+5)
Con: 16 (+6)    Int: 14 (+5)    Cha: 19 (+7)

Tactics: The Desire commands men and women by their desires and fantasies. In battle, she stays behind a group of allies and uses the allure of her voice to disrupt the enemy and bolster her guard. Her lustful utterances and lurid taunts have a magic quality to them that can turn anyone into a slave.

The Desire will maneuver her retinue so as to be able to get close to a strong enemy in her control, and maintain that control. Should the enemy break that control, or should its allies come near to her, she will use her dagger in an expertly-timed attack to stun the enemy, for an opportunity to move away. If the battle is going the wrong way, she will weave a web of confusion to tamper with the enemy’s emotions, slowing them down to allow her to escape.

Lore: A character knows the following information with a successful Streetwise check.

(DC15): The Desire’s influence over the underworld of the kingdom is considerable. Behind every establishment of less-than-honorable repute The Desire can be found. She has every brothel down to the last prostitute and perhaps even the people who frequent.

(DC20): The Desire has some supernatural powers, especially in the realm of enchantment and control of emotions and lusts. Aside from magic she also has quite a way with words, and her command over her servants is almost infallible.

(DC25): The Desire’s true name was Desirae Turpis. The circumstances from which she arose are not entirely certain, but great hardship turned her heart to ice, and she is the closest to a demon than to a human being. Her hatred of men in power is her prime motivator.

Deadly Nymph

A woman who’s beauty approaches even The Desire’s own, her whole body treated and polished to perfection as overseen by the mistress herself. Gorgeous, delicate, clad in fine clothes and wearing decorative sheathes for her weapons, she seems an ordinary if close servant to The Desire. However, this bodyguard’s glass-eyed stare belies the horrifying trance she is in.

“Deadly Nymph” Level 5 Elite Soldier
Medium Natural Humanoid XP 400
Initiative +6; Perception +9
HP 132; Bloodied 66
AC 23; Fortitude 18, Reflex 19, Will 19
Immunities: Charm, Sleep
Resist 5 Weapon, Fire, Cold
Saving Throws +2
Speed 7
Action Points 1
[M-Basic] Ceremonial Scimitar (Standard; AW) ✦Weapon
+12 vs AC; 1d8+5 damage. 1d8+13 on a critical hit.

[Melee] Ceremonial Dagger (Standard; AW) ✦Weapon
+12 vs AC; 1d4+5 damage. 1d4+9 on a critical hit.

[Melee] Ceremonial Dance (Standard; AW) ✦Weapon
The Deadly Nymph shifts 1 square and makes a Ceremonial Scimitar and Ceremonial Dagger attack against one target. If both attacks hit, she knocks the target prone.

[Melee] Unleashed Edge (Immediate Reaction; AW) ✦Weapon
Trigger: An enemy moves into a square adjacent to the Deadly Nymph; the Deadly Nymph makes a Ceremonial Dagger attack against the enemy.

[Melee] Mercurial Dagger (Standard; Encounter) ✦Weapon, Poison
The Deadly Nymph coats her dagger in a deadly poison and makes an attack with it against one target. If successful, the target takes ongoing 5 poison damage and is slowed (save ends both). It has a -2 penalty to its first saving throw against this condition. First Failed Save: The target is dazed instead (save ends). It has a -4 penalty to its first saving throw against this condition.

Trance of Malign Endurance
The Deadly Nymph is in a supernatural trance that keeps her from feeling pain and allows her to battle as a terrifying and unhindered combatant. She gains an extra action point that she must spend before the end of her next turn whenever the Dazed, Slowed, Blinded or Weakened conditions are applied to her. She can spend any number of action points per encounter.
Unaligned; Common, Abyssal
Skills: Athletics +11, Acrobatics +9, Stealth +9, Perception +9, Insight +9
Str: 18 (+6)    Dex: 15 (+4)    Wis: 15 (+4)
Con: 18 (+6)    Int: 15 (+4)    Cha: 15 (+4)
Equipment: Jeweled Scimitar, Jeweled Dagger, vial of mercury

Tactics: A flurry of blades, the Deadly Nymph is as graceful in battle as she is beautiful, and punishing to combat as she is to lust after. The Deadly Nymph stays close to The Desire, moving only in calculated 1 square shifts like she were constantly in a dance. If it proves necessary, she will use a deadly poison on an enemy that has come too close to her mistress.

Lore: A character knows the following information with a successful Streetwise check.

(DC15): Some of The Desire’s servants are said to be in a constant trance, as though in the euphoria of a drug, but this trance is actually a form of hypnotism. Their minds are made to wander between the real world and one of intense pleasure, turning them into instinctual killing machines with nothing but their mistress on the mind.

(DC20): A Deadly Nymph is the greatest servant of The Desire, a woman groomed and reared to perfection. Taken from the lowliest of prostitutes, she is transformed into an object of incredible beauty, but loses much of her individuality in the process. To minds not immediately made dull and lustful by her beauty, The Deadly Nymph seems to move in an artificial rhythm. The Trance renders her an incredible combatant, almost unimpeded by conditions that would render ordinary humans unable to do much.

Do you have any ideas for rules, rituals to “make subjects” into dominated servants a la vampire victims not quite yet lost etc.?
